Call it serendipity. I went to Alcala de Henares on a whim. I was not disappointed. So easy to go there by Cercanias train. In under an hour and for only €3.20 I was transportedd from Madrid's Atocha Renfe station to Alcala de Henares. From Plaza Cervantes, I searched for Casa Cervantes and was pleasantly surprised that the museum does... More

The Museo Casa Natal de Cervantes is located at Calle Mayor, 48, and is the house where the writer Miguel de Cervantes was born in 1547and lived. The house has a typical Castilian construction with a patio surrounded by buildings. The house is furnished with 17th century furniture. What catches one's attention is the room where the ladies of the... More

I brought a small group to see this property rebult in 1955, according to Boyd's Companion Guide to Madrid and Central Spain but clearly renovated in more recent times, 1997, I believe. They were as impressed as I have always been.

This is a very small museum - essentially Cervantes' house when he was a boy, but it is the reason most visitors come to the town (also for the old universitry and the storks on every old rooftop). Cervantes is celebrated endlessly in the town! The museum has rooms restored to their original function when owned by Cervantes' father -... More

It is the home where Cervantes grew up beside the hospital where his father worked as a doctor. The building is small but well restiored giving a great sense of what it was live during those times.

Alcala de Henares has so much to offer and this birthplace museum is just one of the keystones. It's such a small museum that you only need thirty or forty minutes but it's unmissable when you consider Cervantes' place in Hispanic literature.

We were told by local friends that this house wasn't Cervantes' exact birthplace. He was born just next door, on the cross street. But the city thought it was better to have his house on the main tourist route. It's a nice, patio-style house, located next door to the hospital where his father worked as a doctor and which still... More

Well, not exactly. This was the author's birthplace and is a must if you are visiting Alcala (admission is free). Bear in mind that the building is very small and, presumably, that is one reason why the level of interpretation is limited; for me, it works but for many I suspect more information might be welcome. I wish I had... More
