Your initial reaction will be to do the main trail right at the parking lot. Don't. Do the Three Kings trail FIRST. It is much flatter, little climbing and has the petroglyphs closer together (though you do have to walk through a couple of cow pastures to get there). Go until you actually see a trail end sign. The Three... More

McConkie Ranch lies in Dry Fork Canyon north of Vernal. Take a step back (about 900 years) into history by seeing this huge spread of petroglyphs along a beautiful stretch of red rock. The rock wall is on the McConkie's own land and they've graciously opened it for people to visit. But don't touch the markings! The oils in your... More

Quite apart from the value of the rock art to archeaologists, the practical aspect of accessing some of the petroglyphs is difficult. Among the many reasons to visit Utah, visiting the sites of the Fremont People and the Pre-Publoan (Anasazi) People are central. Throughout Dinosaur National Park and the Yampa River canyon are sites of the Fremont People, especially their petroglyphs and pictographs. Getting to this rock art can be challenging if you are not hiking, rafting and do not have a... More

We recently went to Vernal to visit the McConkie Ranch petroglyph site. The site is located just a few miles north of Vernal, on private property. The road to the site is well-marked, but be sure to watch for the sign on the right side of the road which leads to the ranch. The ranch is about a quarter mile... More
