I love archaeological ruins, and this one is certainly interesting and is a focal point for Naxos but once you climb up the hill there's not a lot to do. There are great views, to be sure, there are more interesting things to see on Naxos. It's still worth seeing, however, so don't let me dissuade you from that.

This is an unbeatable attraction. It is free and gorgeous and ancient. The only thing is you have to walk over a pathway that gets splashed by waves a lot to get there, at least the waves were wild enough when we were there. This is probably fine in Summer but we were there in November and it was 13... More

The Portara is about all that's left of a half-finished ancient temple. Standing on a tiny island (now connected to the mainland with a causeway), it's the island's signature sight.

Portara is the trademark of Naxos island. It is dominant and majestic. Make sure you visit it during sunset and wait till the sun appears through the great door! Of course you will not be alone... dozens of cameras are waiting for the same moment, but the site is breathtaking! In the day time, it is a different yet interesting... More
