Despite the security check and vehicle inspection necessary to get onto the Fort Story base, it is worth it to go see the old lighthouse (and climb the inside stairs if you want to).

The lighthouse keepers were super nice and knew the history of the lighthouse when I asked questions. Definitely recommend walking up to the top if you are physically able. Great views and wonderful experience.

You get two lighthouses for the price of one. The security was tight getting in to the military base. I just wanted a photo of the lighthouses. It was worth the security check.

The history behind the lighthouses were interesting and you get to see the old & new both and you can climb up the stairs of the old light house & get a good view of the surrounding area of Virginia Beach & the ocean.

Very cool and an awesome quiet beach! Very friendly military base, guards are welcome. Only the old lighthouse can be visited ($5per person). Must be able to walk up 200 stairs, they also have history tour that we were not interested in. Please not that the only bathrooms are 2 port o potties.

Spend a little money to climb to the top of the lighthouse for an amazing view.

this was my first visit to the lighthouse. The interior is awesome! I learned a lot from Bob, a volunteer who shared the history of the place. There are a lot of stairs, but anyone with determination can make it up. It's not too hard.

It's well worth the $5 admission, and 191 stairs to the top, for the incredible views!
