This may not be the bells and whistles and entertainment of the area but it is the foundation of where the areas history began. We had kids 7 and 9 with us. We saw the video and walked the grounds. We did not read every plaque. History can be as fun as you make it. We enjoyed it and we... more

For us,Jamestown has always been worth visiting not because they had fascinating exhibits- they don't- but because it is the first permanent English settlement. You could stand there on the banks fo the James River and imagine what these people faced. It was inspiring. and still for the most part is. Unfortunately they have now erected a modern museum on... more

The actual site of the Jamestown settlement has few structures left and limited re-creation of the time period, making it difficult to hold childrens' interest. No programs for children or costumed interpreters when we visited the first saturday in june. Not as suitable for families as Jamestown Settlement. more

I honestly did not like Historic Jamestowne. Spent a lot of time walking to see 1ft foundations that used to be houses. It was quite boring and not a place recommended to take kids. If you are interested in something that's more interactive then visit Jamestown Settlement. more

Ok first off this is not the place with the 3 ships and the recreation Fort and Indian village. This is the ACTUAL sight run by the National Park Service. We first went to the Jamestown Settlement and was kinda disappointed. We do not like school kid history and recreations. (The plastic ships was the biggest disappointment there) Historic Jamestowne... more

First of all, TripAdviser would do all travelers a service by separating the categories "Jamestown Settlement" from "Historic Jamestown." This is especially true when you're driving and come to the fork in the road that shows "Historic Jamestown" (the actual archeological digs) to the left and "Jamestown Settlement" (the re-creation and indoor galleries) to the right. If you bought a... more

I didn't expect to be blown away by Historic Jamestown but I was! We went to Jamestown Settlement first & that was truly interesting seeing the rebuilt fort, indian village & ships. Then we went over to Historic Jamestown, the actual site of the first settlement & I truly felt like I was standing on hallowed ground. There is not... more

This is the original Jamestown location - run by the National Park Service. This is not Jamestown Settlement where the reinactors and ships are. There seems to be a lot of confusion between the two sites. My wife, 14 yr old daughter and 10 yr old son went to both sites on the same day. We went to Jamestown Settlement... more

It looks as if some people still have this Historic Jamestowne confused with the Jamestown Settlement. This is the Historic Jamestowne, which is where the original settlement actually was. That's why this is so confusing. Over a hundred men arrived on this small island and died just a few years after their arrival. There is an old church (not as... more

Took the entire family to the Jamestown Settlement (AAA discount if you are a member). All of them enjoyed it, even the kids (17, 8, 5 years old). Once you enter the museum, the first opportunity you have is to watch a short film (24 minutes) on the establishment of Jamestown up through the Virginia Company's dissolution. Then, you can... more
