Confusing, expensive, and not much to see. There's a hike that's poorly signed with caged-in areas with several pieces of petrified wood. There's no explanation of how the petrified wood occurred or when. There is a $10/car charge to take this 15 minute hike. Why? The only good part was that you see different species. Having seen the Petrified Forest... More

I had a blast here with my Girl Scout Troop several years ago, and would highly recommend this place as a day-hiking destination. Make sure to be aware of the weather before you go, though, there is almost no shade or protection from the elements.

The hike is easy and the foothill desert terrain is beautiful. Lots of wildlife tracks. Petrified wood is cool but once you've seen a couple, you've pretty much seen it all. All logs are behind bars due to theft of petrified wood. Would be nice if the information on the site was onsite, instead of down near little town.

What't not to like about petrified wood? It is amazing to think that these stones were once living trees. The history of the area is very interesting. It's a windy area but worth the visit.

The Ginkgo Petrified Forest State Park is a walking trail that takes you around to 15 petrified tree stumps located in cement protective cages in the ground. (see pictures) If you need a walk or love seeing petrified wood then this is a fine place…but the only alive trees you will see is a few at the ranger station. They... More
