I have been tasting wine for over 35 years both in Europe and North America. Going to Blackwood Canyon is like taking a trip into the past. This place has a European feel to it. No pretentious gift shop, this place focuses on wine. The winemaker is a mad scientist. A genius at his art. I tasted a wine style... more

In mid September 2009 we visited Blackwood Canyon for the fourth time since the Early 80's. Michael used to be a talented wine maker, but even since he introduced the vinegar making process to his winery he has ruined his wines. Read some of these other reviews and you will see exactly what I mean...and things are not getting better... more

As a long-time local, and an avid wine drinker for over a decade, I've had these wines more than once. My understanding is that the place was better 10 or 15 years ago. Mike has put out a few decent wines, but his output is really unstable. I took some friends there a few weeks ago, because they really wanted... more

We've been stopping at Blackwood Canyon every trip through the Tri-cities area for about 30 years. Sometimes we hit other wineries as well, but usually we just go straight to Mike's. Our cellar has about 5 cases of his wine at any given time. The 20-year-old Chards are treasured (only opened for special occasions) and the Merlots and Cabs are... more

You are correct in saying that no other winemakers will say anything bad about Blackwood Canyon - - kind of reminds me of the emporer who had no clothes?? Know what I mean! But it also speaks to the familial group of winemakers we have in the area. They treat Blackwood like a family treats that old crazy uncle...old crazy... more

If you are pretenious and care more about how the winery looks instead of how it tastes --- this place is not for you. It is some of the best wine in the state easily. As Mike (the winemaker) will tell you, the more money you spend on a fancy building the less you have to spend on making good... more

We really like Red Mountain wines so were very excited to be able to visit the AVA. We planned on 2-3 winery visits on this cold sunny Sunday afternoon. We only made two - enter Mike Moore of Blackwood Canyon... It is a very different looking winery with hundreds of barrels of wine sitting outside and a pretty dismal building... more

OK, to start with, about 5 years ago, I happened upon his winery the same way that many people do...............he is open the latest, you already have a bit of a buzz, therefore can probably explain the tolerance for the filth of his facility and himself!! The wine 5 years ago, and in the end, the experience was 1 of... more

Note- I would have given five stars, but the dirt was a bit overwhelming. Still- I'm not sure I'd want this place to change much. On a wine tasting trip to Walla Walla this weekend my friends and I stopped at Blackwood Canyon in Benton City. It’s become the highlight of our trip! We tried a few wineries on our... more

First of all, to the previous reviewer who complained of the 'vinegar-ry' smell, I have been to Blackwood several times and never smelled vinegar, except when I was sampling some of the excellent vinegar that they do have for sale here. The overriding smell in this winery is one of port-like grapiness, which is indicative of the delicately aged wines... more
