We drove up the saddle road from Hilo in May 2009. It was bitumen all the way and a great road to drive on. The center is very basic but informative enough. We drove up from Hilo and found the drive on Saddle Road to be kind of fun - the road was in perfectly good condition but ungraded, so you weave up and down through the landscape. Just make sure to gas up before you leave. The visitor center itself is nothing much to speak of - the real attraction here... more
While visiting the Big Island last week we decided that a trip up Mauna Kea was an absolute must see for our boys, 8 and 5. We were not disappointed! We called in advance and were told that they were doing the night time viewing from 6-10 pm. My sister in law wanted to take her boys up to see so we packed everyone in the car and made the 2 hour drive up from Kona. The road up here (Saddle Road) isn't the best and some rental car companies... more
