If it wasn't a rental we wouldn't have tackled the 2.58 mile off road lava loaded trail. Luckily, our friends were locals and urged us on. Even daring me to race the Jeep back (don't do it - I fell 3 times!) From above it might be a drab olive green beach - but when you climb down you sink... More

I have been on the big island over a week & this is the best attraction I have seen so far. We drove our rental Elantra 4 door car to the parking area and hiked the 3 miles into the beach itself. Gorgeous views all the way there, you walk along the coast all the way, the wind is blowing... More

We had no high expectations for this visit to the Green Sand Beach, and it always seem to be the under-anticipated explorations that offer us the best memories. This was one of those events. After claiming our view of the southernmost point of the U.S. at South Point, we then took the road to the trail head parking lot. Not... More

It is a curious thing to see. Note from wear you park give yourself an hour to walk each direction. You can cheat and pay one of the locals who will transport you in there 4x4 out and back for around $15 each person. Take water and a snack especially if you're walking. If it is raining hard you might... More

Slightly difficult to find (only slightly) you will not see any signs saying "this way to the green beach" and be prepared to walk a ways, possibly in some strong wind. It is a small beach, but well worth the couple miles round-trip. While my wife and I were swimming the the aqua blue waters, I saw a sea turtle!... More

This green beach is located right next to La Kae pt. It has very unique olive green sand beach. You will need to walk about 50min from the parking area. There are no signs at all. Once you hit the beach make left and head north. There are several paths but as long as you see ocean on your right,... More

Green Sand Beach is worth seeing. Not wanting to hike the few miles, we rented a 4x4 from Harper Car Rental. Be careful: If you take a rental to Green Sand Beach, it is prohibited. I did ask and was told it was restricted but at my own risk. The drive to the beach was rough and since we did... More

Dealing with Harpers was the only negative in our trip to Hawaii. After reading internet forums we booked an SUV from Harpers for one day to go to Green Sands Beach. We had read this was the only rental in Big Island to allow off road. At the time of the booking and on the rental agreement we received no... More

This old cinder cone is a sight very much worth your while. If you walk at a steady pace it will take you around 45 minutes from the parking lot. I suggest you bring a pair of comfy shorts, and a light shirt; for your feet bring a pair of tennis shoes or a sturdy pair of sandals. Keep sunscreen,... More

As I said in my review of Mauna Kea this is not a trip for those that just want to kick back and spend beach time. This is a trip for those looking for an adventure. There are really 2 attractions here. Southpoint is the Southern Most point in the US. It is easily accessible on a narrow but paved... More
