To see the Allerton Gardens, you must take a tour which costs around $40 per person and lasts about 2 hours. You'll understand once you see it why you can't do a self guided tour. We went with a group of 8 family members. I wasn't sure whether the kids would like the tour, but they loved it. The scenery was varied - most of it jaw-droppingly beautiful. With all the glowing reviews and comments we had heard beforehand, our expectations might have been too high. The garden is beautiful and the guided tour lasts a full two and a half hours, but it seems that the other reviewers got more "interesting stories" than we did. You can do a free walking tour on Mother's Day yearly, which we did, but when we returned to Kauai, we took the $30 guided tour and it was well worth it! This is one gorgeous place! We saw all kinds of flowers and trees, they have fountains, and a couple of small waterfalls.
