From Kapa'a, it's a drive... a long drive. Make sure you are ok spending A LOT of time one day to make this trip. Also, make sure the gas tank is full below you head up the ridges, NO GAS STATIONS to help you. You don't want to get stuck up there. Four-wheel drive isn't necessary, unless its raining. It... more

Came here on my honeymoon. Drove about an hour to here from our hotel and it was well worth it. The views are absolutely breathtaking, and we found ourselves stopping at one of the many beautiful spots to take pictures! It is like a green, lush version of the grand canyon. We parked across the street from the Koke'e State... more

If you are in Kauai, you HAVE to check on Waimea Canyon State Park. If you are the hiking type, there are lots of trails in this park and the adjacent Koke'e State Park. If you are not the hiking type, definitely drive up and stop at the various lookouts. There are several good places to stop in the two... more

About 70 miles from Princeville, 2 hour drive Take 550 from central Waimea or 552 about two miles past Waimea Leave early and bring a light jacket (15 degree drop) Kauai driving is casual, drive with courtesy and don’t be in a rush No entrance fee! Lookout 1 is the Waimea Canyon view; suggest eating a lunch here although there... more

The drive up the canyon is very windy, but it's worth it. There are 5 or 6 lookouts from which you can get some great pictures. I attached a few of ours, but it was a little hazy that day. more

My boyfriend and I hiked the Canyon trail but stopped at the Waipoo falls - which is a 3.6-mile roundtrip hike. This was a very good hike as even during mid-day, it is cool with all the tall trees throughout the trail. It goes up to a boulder overlooking the whole Canyon, without any railings and it is a very... more

We spent a long time driving up narrow, windy roads. However, once we arrived, the view was worth it. more

Waimea Canyon is amazing to put it simply. I wouldn't recommend the drive from Kekaha (Kokee Rd. Highway 552) as it seems really long, is very winding and not nearly as scenic as the Waimea Canyon Drive (Highway 550) from Waimea. The first overlook is wonderful. We were there midday and the lighting was great. I can only imagine how... more

My wife and I stopped at the lookout during our day trip to Kauai. We had flown over from Oahu and rented a car for the day to check things out, and get away from all the hustle of Waikiki. Now that we have been there, we cannot wait to go back. It was a bit hazy during our visit... more

It's definitely worth the drive. Go in the morning before the warm air from the ocean rises and meets with the cool air and forms fog. It was foggy at the top and the 1 mile hile wasn't worth it. We drove down a little way to the Awa'awapuhi Trail, which is a 6.2 mile hike round trip. The hike... more
