Traveled to Shipwreck Beach on Saturday, 8/29/09 as part of a one-day trip to Lanai from Maui. Like the other reviewers have said, you need to rent a 4WD to get to Shipwreck Beach. It was very windy when we went (February '08), so I'd bring a light sweater or jacket if you tend to get cold. Shipwreck Beach is worth going to if you are in Lanai. Most of the road is paved when driving from Lanai City to the beach, but the last part requires a 4wd. We rented a jeep which was nice for the last part. We didn't stay too long at the beach since we wanted to see others on the island,... more

The road is paved all of the way from Lana`i City, about 1 hour down the mountain, to the beach, and then it becomes dirt requiring a 4 wheel drive for the road through the scrub land along the shore. This beach is the best bodyboarding beach on Kauai during the summer months. Watch out for the shore break though because it can become rough on big surf days. Nice sand too for people who dont like the water. more
