The Wai'anapanapa Black Sand Beach was my favorite stop on the road to Hana. It was totally different than everything else on the island because of the black sand and the beautiful turquoise water. If we had turned around here I wouldn't have missed the rest of the road to Hana. Also, if you haven't already, get "Maui Revealed" if... more

A must-do on the highway to Hana. We stopped here to eat our lunch, as did a number of others. It was absolutely beautiful. We wished we had our swimsuits to take a dip. The black sand beach was gorgeous. I could have been happy even turning around at this point as Oheo Gulch did not top this for me. more

What a killer spot. The cabins are "grungy" but they provide all you really need (power, water, fridge, stove/oven, bed and shower). They also have a nice porch with various tropical trees hanging over. it's a short walk to a black sand beach, blow holes, lava tubes, fresh water caves and a trail that goes into Hana. If your a... more

Waianapanapa State Park is a great place to stop and visit on the road to Hana. The lush green fauna against the ocean backdrop is beautiful. The Black Sand beach should not be missed. We just walked around the park and visited the beach. We didn't actually stop and swim. Black Sand comes from lava, so the grains are bigger... more

If you make the drive to Hana, you must stop at Wai'anapanapa State Park. It's a beautiful place to visit! The black sand beach is lovely. We didn't swim, but we spent some time walking along the beach. The rock formations are amazing! There were a fair number of people swimming in the ocean, but the beach wasn't overly crowded.... more

We read all the reviews regarding Waianapapanapa State Park, which are mixed, and now I can see why. We arrived mid-afternoon, and the park was quiet and serene. The scenery was breathtaking, although the cabin itself is properly described as grungy. Not dirty, grungy. However, when we returned from getting dinner, about 9pm, there were 10 cars parked in our... more

Wai'anapanapa state park is, in my opinion, a must see. The black sand (ok, ok, pebbles) against the almost neon green vegitation and the cobalt blue water is breathtaking. The freshwater caves to the north are not really worth your time. The blowhole was not blowing when we were there. The beach was lovely. Wear water shoes or tevas to... more

Wai'anapanapa State Park was a great diversion along the Road to Hana. The black sand beach was amazing and easy to walk to. There are also very interesting wet and dry caves to explore further insland away from the beach. On our first trip down the highway we got there kind of late and the sun was already going down.... more

A beautiful park with interesting geography and sites. However, during my visit, the facilities were being renovated (the bathroom and shower facilities were in bad shape). The grounds were clean and free of litter. There are plenty of tables if you wanted to bring a lunch. This is the rainy side of Maui, so plan for unpredictable weather. I stayed... more

You gotta stop here on your Road to Hana trip. The black sand beach is just breathtaking and make sure you check out the sea arch and cave while at the beach. This was my husband's favorite stop on our day trip to Hana and beyond. Saw lots of little unmanned stands with local produce...check it out! Also saw what... more
