We took the night tour at the isle. Was worth it! The guides take it serious and are very entertaining telling the stories and legends.
This is another one of those things that you don't want to miss when visiting San Francisco! There are many many layers of history here an the flowers and birds that now inhabit the island are spectacular! I highly recommend taking a sweatshirt of sweater as the boat ride to the island I thought My ears were going to freeze...

Yes, there are not many opportunities to take the garden tour but it is so worth the advance planning. The gardens are spectacular in late May. To die for! Very knowledgeable docents. Fascinating history back to the civil war fortifications. Plus great views of the city and the GG Bridge.
Well known from numerous movies, still very interesting to discover the history of this little island where the families of the guards used to live as well and signs of Indians occupation are still visible.
We did the night tour of Alcatraz. I booked about a month ahead although I noticed they had a standby line there so assume maybe you can get on last minute. This is a very interesting trip. Alcatraz Cruises leaves from Pier 33 [see their website]. Very interesting audio tour of the main cell block.
