Was there recently and 10 years before that. A little more commercial now but having lived during that segment of time it still has the vibe.

We took a leisurely stroll thru Haight Ashbury stopping as recommended at Amoeba's music etal. emporium..hmmm
Anyhow we ventured down Haight St. to "Cha Cha Cha's" for some much needed nourishment.. Great Mexican! We then continued on past the Psychdelic tee shirt and tourist shops interspersed with Head Shops.. The 60's or at least the commercial component are alive and...

We're a mid-sixties couple who grew up hearing and reading about the people, music, drugs and politics of Haight Ashbury. We knew we could go there to see what it is like now but wanted more information than that would give us so we took the 2 PM Haight Ashbury Flower Power Walking Tour. What fun !! P:art hippie part posh. It became famous for the people who liked to wear tie/dye and smoke cigarettes that didn't come in a packet. What's great about it is that it's still retained some of that anarchic feel, whilst becoming a little more mainstream as well. You'll find designer stores next to places selling bongs. Some great restaurants and eateries...

took a public bus ($2) from Union Square to Haight-Ashbury area. I walked a 1/4 each way along Haight st and window shopped. Most stores have bongs for sale and literally everyone walking around has tattoos and 3 inch long ear lobes. its a cool place to people watch but it gets old after 20 minutes. theres arent many places...

We thought it would be fun to walk the neighborhood, and it was until our car got broken into (10:30 am on a Monday on Haight). We are well travelled and have never been victimized before. Head shops=drugs=crime.
Walking the Haight is a must-do for visitors. Packed in between boutiques, consignment and thrift stores are head shops, funky jewelry stores, shops full of nick-knacks and tons of restaurants. It's a great place to spend an afternoon.
Beware of aggressive pan-handlers. Just ignore them, and they'll move on to the next person.
We took our 17 year-old niece here...

Give yourself a treat and walk through San Francisco's historic Haight-Ashbury district. I was pleased with the sense I got that I had one foot back in the Sixties...record stores, hemp shops, offbeat stores galore. R Crumb would be right at home.
Sketchy neighborhood, shops don't open until 11. People don't pick up after their dogs on the sidewalk. Still a neat piece of San Fran history though.
Growing up on the Bay Area Peninsula in my teenage years in the late 60's, Haight-Ashbury was a place that I was "forbidden" to go by my parents. However, at age 60, this is a fun walk which my husband and I often take as we travel to or from GG Park. Lots of street art, interesting stores, and of...
