I have wanted to visit Vesuvio since I read "On the Road" some 15 years ago. When I finally got to visit, it was exactly what I thought it would be. It had so much character, so much charm and so much personality that immediately it felt like my own neighborhood bar. The bartender was so kind and gracious, an... More

Interestingpear converted from an old theatre. I visited for years not realizing it was a haunt of jack Kerouac. Worth a stop but it is not cheap just as the rest of San Feancisco.

It was packed when we were here, but we're pleased we went - it had a great atmosphere and felt very iconic.

On a recent vacation, my boyfriend and I stopped into Vesuvio for an after dinner brandy. While the neighborhood is noisy and boisterous, we found a delicious nook on the upstairs balcony, overlooking the street and City Lights books. The prices are reasonable and the atmosphere was a welcome break from the noise and traffic. We stopped in at other... More

Went here after a night walking around the Pier. Type of atmosphere you would expect from a real bar, except with friendly people. $4 shot of crow & beer specials. Don't remember much else of the night after that. A must!

We went on a Friday and there are all kinds of people. I ordered a martini and got a shot glass on the side with the leftover. When I asked the bartender he told me it was the leftover as it is not an exact science. It's an experience and I recommend it, if you want a non tourist place... More

I was happy to find a bar where they have Belgian beer without the usual astronomical prices. The girls behind the bar were very nice, though I was a bit surprised that they asked for my ID (later I learned this is very usual in the States). The place itself is cosy and charming, a must when in San Francisco!

A ton to look at, perfect place to grab a beer while you are waiting for a table somewhere. We sat upstairs, great view of the street. My favorite part was that our booth had an antique sign that read "booth for lady psychiatrists." This was spectacular because I am, in fact, a lady psychiatrist.

When I took a trip to San Francisco last year, my first stop was the North Beach area and the infamous City Lights Bookstore. That first night in the city, my friends and I decided that in honour of Jack Kerouac himself, we'd go to the bar he used to visit. It was the only bar we went back to... More

It's worth a stop solely for the decor and the history. We found the service unfriendly: the waitress almost pushed me down the steps without an apology or waiting for us to get by. My mixed drink was not too good either. I should have sticked to a beer. Will not return. I would recommend it only to check the... More
