The short walk up to the vista is well worth it! There weren't a lot of people so it was fine with our on-leash dog.
This is one of only places in the world to explore this type of biome, known as a bald. The forest clears out and a beautiful and surprising grassland thrives. This very unique landscape is worth a visit!

The Visitors Center was very small. The water was turned off for the indoor bathrooms. The trees were stunted and covered in lichen. It was cold and windy. Most of this is due to the high elevation and traveling at the end of October.
The parking area is north of Asheville, NC. The elevation is 5400+ feet. Travel a little farther north to the upper parking area and take a short hike to the peak. It's worth the drive in the spring to see the Rhododendron in bloom. Hopefully there won't be too much fog (I seem to have a 50/50 chance), but it's beautiful there. Well worth your time to go there.
