We visited in Jan 09 and it is an interesting part of the city. One can find nightlife of course yet during the day we did our own walking tour of the origional period architecture. This place has done a 180 in the last 5 years from what it once was. I mean this in a good way. the restaurants are world class and the entertainment is everywhere. From street performers to Petco park- home of the Padres, everything is at your fingertips. The waterfront is walking distance from the Gaslamp and the night life... more

STAY AWAY. While the section called the Gaslamp Quarter can be viewed as nice, I felt it was far too congested with over priced mediocre restaurants and far too congested with the "riff-raff" of the city.
