New York Rising reveals the rich, visceral stories of the Federalera city and the people who helped shape it. Five interactive touch screens make it all come to life. New York and the American Experience will introduce you to the major themes that show the central role New York played in the evolution of the United States. New York Under Your Feet will show you 12 subterranean cases (two of which are holographic) that magically tell the story of urban archaeology and the relics found underground in New York. Remembering 9/11: Here Is New York features a series of moving photographs taken on and shortly after September 11, 2001. New York Story (an 18-minute theatrical media experience set in a custom-designed, state-of-the-art theater) illuminates the story of New York and its rise from a remote outpost to a city at the center of the world. Our restaurant, Caffè Storico, is an innovative dining destination with a menu focused on cicchetti, small plates from the Veneto region of Italy. Our beautifully designed Museum Store features a large selection of gifts for every age. « less

NYC has no shortage of museums, and the never ending challenge to draw visitors is ultimately a win-win for those literally deciding between buildings across the street from each other. That said, the "old" NYHS could be invisible to many in the shadow of the magnificent Museum of Natural History and the activity of Central Park. I will prefice this... More

Even most New Yorker haven't visited this terrific museum. While it is presented as a history of the city, because of the period covered and NYC's role in American history, it offers insights into how our ancesters lived from colonial times until the present. If you go to the Natural History Museum, you're only two blocks away. Similarly, if you... More

We have been to a dozen or so museums in New York City over the last ten trips or so, but when we first tried to go to the New York Historical Society Museum it was closed for rennovations. This year we went back and they did a great job with the rennovations and the place is very interesting from... More

This is a wonderful museum and the docent that took our group around was a delight. The exhibits were very interesting and I recommend coming here on your visit to NY!

New York is a tumultuous love affair - but if you are a New Yorker (or visiting as well) the New-York Historical Society will reconnect you to why you absolutely love the place. Exhibits change, so it is worth while to go often. The short film of New York City is worth seeing over and over. Visiting us? Come see... More

Highly recommended. The NYHS has remarkably well-informed, very welcoming docents and guides. This is the best you can expect at any of the cultural institutions in New York.

We visited the newly renovated museum last week with an 85-year-old, 12-year-old, and 9-year-old. We all loved it (although the 12-year-old wasn't quite as keen, and certainly wouldn't admit enjoying herself!) Start with the 18-minute orientation movie about NYC, it brought tears to our eyes and made us proud to be New Yorkers. In the lobby, a couple of "Revolutionary... More

Very informative, informative film about the history of NYC. We were able to see the Revolution exhibit and experience the prohibition. We learned so much. Other permanent exhibits from various artists was great as well.

If you haven't been to the NYHS recently, by all means go now. As wonderful as it was before, it's even better now after a multi-million dollar renovation. The new theater and film are really very good as an orientation to the city's history. The new lobby is packed with exhibits that give color to the people and events that... More
