Whenever you head into the city there are just those places you have to go. This is one of those places! If you love books (like I do), this is the place for you. When you walk in, you are surrounded by a huge mecca of books! They are on shelves, tables, walls, mazes of books just all over the... More

Chicago doesn't have many great bookstores left so I particularly enjoyed visiting The Strand during my recent visit to NYC. Miles of shelves packed with every imaginable category of books. Thrill to the glory days of book-shopping when you visit The Strand. You just might think ereaders never existed. (I love mine, by the way.)

I love independent bookstores, and this is a gem. 4 floors of books; comfy chairs on the 3rd floor. Friendly staff who know their books.

It seems I've been spoiled rotten by Powell's City of Books in Portland, OR. Strand is much along the same vein. Still, it should be an absolute paradise for your average book lover. Strand has stacks and stacks of both new and used books at very reasonable prices (the new Malcolm Gladwell was $12 or so). Having to cram so... More

It advertises 18 miles of books and I would believe it! They have a large selection and very reasonable prices. The only reason I did not give it a 5 is because it was so incredibly hot in there that we literally had sweat running down our spines. That made us cut our visit short because it wasn't comfortable to... More

I bought 11 books for $14. I wish that I hadn't been so tired when I visited this store - I probably only looked through one-third of the titles in the store. Prices are excellent, and the store is very well-organized. Easy to get to by public transit. Every book-lover that visits NYC should make sure to visit this shop.

If you love books, you have to go here. It's well organized, new books are discounted, and used and out of print books are easily found. You can check their website ahead of time to see what's available. It retains a lot of the feel of the old, independently run book boutiques while incorporating modern conveniences.

The Strand is a very large, multilevel bookstore, with an amazing variety of books, and terrific personal service. They even have a rare books department. There is an elevator, and restroom. The Strand offers a terrific selection of books for children, as well as for students and adults. There are so many other things for sale there too, such as... More
