This was my first time in NYC, and I really wanted to catch a good live jazz show. Boy, did I pick the right one! After searching around on the web and reading some reviews I came across the Jazz Standard which runs a Mingus tribute night every monday. The band itself is organized by Mingus' widow and comes in... More

... We went and saw the Mingus Orchestra and they are fantastic and the room creates an unparalleled ambiance. The shows however are an hour for $25 each and the servers lack attention to the tables. I would have loved another round. If your okay with the hour show or no to expect that it is fantastic.

We arrived before the doors opened, got a good seat and had plenty of time for dinner before the first set. The club itself is nice but nothing elaborate, and the food and service were good, but it is the Mingus Big Band that we will remember. What a terrific set they played - it is a 14 piece band,... We arrived early, so went to Blue Smoke upstairs for a drink and wait for the Jazz Standard doors to open. We seated ourselves a little further back as I did not want to be ontop of the band. The music was okay -The Mingus Big Band. I'm not a fan of this type of "chaotic" jazz, perhaps I dont... More

Unlike most jazz clubs, the Standard doesn't have a minimum, you can sit all night without ordering anything. But as soon as you enter you encounter the divine fragrance of wood-smoked barbecue, who can resist? The food menu isn't huge, but most of the offerings are quite tasty. Appetizers such as calamari with a sweet red pepper dip or the... More

Jazz standard is in a creeky old Chelsea basement. Jazz quality can vary but often is good. Food is the best in any jazz club in NY. BBQ from Blue Smoke is great. Pick your night, have some food and enjoy.

We had a nice night until employees treated us bad. Our waiter never came back to our table after he brought first beer so I went to the bar to order another round but the Asian bartender was very unfriendly and ordered me to get back to the seat. My friend went back to the bar. This same bartender who... More

After searching for a good jazz venue for our upcoming visit to NYC, I chose Jazz Standard over all the competition and hoped for the best. Melissa Morgan, who I hadn't heard of before was the star of the evening. I purchased my tickets for the early seating about a month ahead of time. My wife and I arrived @... More
