It's amazing how being steps from the streets of 2012, you are such a short distance from life as it was in the 1700's. The church, church museum and the gardens are all very worthwhile. The quiet and peacefulness juxtaposed to the reality of streets nearby littered with the homeless really gives you pause to think how timeless and powerfull... More

Though the place is still *used* I think that adds to its charm. There's a small tour and a gift shop that's a bit kitsch-y but worth a look.

What a beautiful mission. It is set in such a gorgeous downtown area. My favorite by far is the Mission San Luis Rey, however, this one is rather impressive as well. Mission Carmel is worth a visit too.

We attended the Palm Sunday service - it was well attended, and the Father officiating was warm and welcoming. The service was moving, We went to the museum and shop - and took the self guided tour.
