I don't know of another park like it. The lava rock varies around the park, as does the wildlife & other things. If you have time & can do a bit of a hike, check out the lava tubes (aka caves). Very neat!

If you love volcanoes this place is a paradise for you. I am a hiker so I come here mainly to do that. My favorite trail is The North Crater Trail, which winds across the lava and ends in the Snow Cone a huge crater. The trail passes in top of the crater and you can see the bottom way...

We spent longer here than we expected. The information centre was very interesting as was the whole area. The drive through was amazing. You don't need to get out of the car if you don't want to. But if you do it is well worth walking up to the top of the larger cinder cones just for the veiw alone....

When driving through Arco, Idaho - we had no idea - but learned - that it was the first town in the world to be powered by nuclear power! and then, farther down the road, we venture into the black valley that is "Craters of the Moon"! We hiked through the lava tubes and into a cave... and atop the...

These craters of the moon are definitely of volcanic origin. We enjoyed the steep, but short walk up Inferno Cone the best. From atop this cone, we could see cinder cones lined up along the Great Rift. Big Cinder Butte, towering above the lava plain to the south, is one of the world's largest basaltic cinder cones. We didn't stay...

We took a new path south to north which brought us to Craters of the Moon Nat'l Monument. We had never been there and decided to stop. There is plenty of interesting black lava formations all around before you get to the park itself. Once inside the building there are clean restrooms and vending machines. There are movies running telling...

I was surprised at how interesting and beautiful this park was. Driving through Idaho, I wasn't prepared for the complete change in landsape at Craters of the Moon. All of a sudden, you are surrounded by black lava gravel, rocks, and formation.
We spent a few hours here--visited the Visitor's Center and small bookstore, drove the loop road and pulled...

Craters is a great place to hike, camp, explore, or to just stop to stretch the legs. The visitor center and rangers are incredibly friendly and helpful. There are just so many interesting things to do and see in this place... old volcanoes, new volcanoes, lava fields, interesting animal and plant life, and more. You can hike to the top...

Quite an experience walking over the lava rock, thru caves, seeing wildlife, and realizing how this has all come to be.
