Beginning in Reno, we then drove to Lee Vining, CA, as the startpoint for the eastern entrance into Yosemite this past June 2009. But we allowed one day in Lee Vining first, in order to visit the Bodie State Park /Ghost Town (awesome - see separate evaluation) and Mono Lake -- mainly the south shore tufa formations (that's what they're... more

Visited Mono lake on the way from Lake Tahoe to Yosemite National Park. The weather was beautiful and we enjoyed the loop trail to the shore line with tufas and all the birds and back. We took some great pictures near the lake. Don't miss the informative plaques that tell you about the lake's history and inhabitants. Admission is $6... more

Mono Lake is such an interesting place! The foliage is sparse. The lake is shallow. There is a real beauty to the place. Mono Lake is where most of California's gulls go to breed. The terrain is desert-like, so if you go there in the summer, make sure to bring water, a hat, sunscreen, etc. The visitor center is a... more

I came to Mono Lake because of a beautiful picture I saw from the AAA Magazine. The picture I saw was so stunning that I was little disappointed to see the real thing. I think Mono Lake is more interesting if you like bird watching or very interested to geography. Lee Vining by Mono Lake is a very very small... more

Mono Lake was very scenic and a great photo opportunity. We stayed in Lee Vining, CA and took the tour at the South Tufa Reserve, which was very informative and interesting. The tufa are limestone tower formations that rise from the salt water lake. We also hiked around the Panum Crater. There's a nice bird's eye, panoramic view of Mono... more

Mono Lake is amazing and it's not well known - myself and companion were only ones there. The tufa towers are so weird with some bizarre formations. I used about seven rolls of films! I had some of the photographs reprinted in sepia and in black and white and they look great. It's such a beautiful and peaceful place, and... more

How many times in my life have I drive right by Mono Lake, and never stopped. For once, Autum 2004, we stopped and drove to see the Tufa. Wonderful experience! We must have spent an hour there, wandering all around, taking photos, just enjoying every aspect of the place. The tufa felt very spiritual to me, and I loved them. more

Located in California's spectacular Eastern Sierra, Mono Lake is an oasis in the dry Great Basin and a vital habitat for millions of migratory and nesting birds. There is an interesting visitor center - drive north from Lee Vining -on Highway 395. It is an immense inland salt lake with many interesting tufa sculptures - The "tufa towers," formed when... more
