Drive a few miles south of Lee Vining on Hwy 395, then turn left on Road 120 and park at the South shore parking lot. Walk a few hundred yards to the strange-looking shore with its alien-looking tufa columns. Watch nesting ospreys, ducks and grebes, as well as millions of lake flies (when in season). Photograph the green or rainbow... More

Worth the stop if traveling near Yosemite or Mammoth! Be sure to pick up educational brochure at front entrance that describes the history in detail. Neighboring volcano craters are cool if you are into geology. And a really pleasant surprise is the Mobile Gas Station Resturant across the street! I normally would never consider gas station food, but this one... More

Mono Lake has an unfortunate history due to excessive water abstraction which has made it become salty. There are now efforts being made to manage the area and this is showing signs of success with water levels slowly rising again. Visit the little centre in Lee Vining to get more info. There are good paths in the area we visited... More

Mono Lake is a nice place just east of Yosemite. It is a very unique place and should be seen if you are in the area. I don't recommend planning a trip around only Mono Lake. After 1 - 2 hours you will have seen all there is to see and you'll be ready to return to Mammoth or Yosemite.... More

Pretty and sort of interesting, but suffers in comparison to the nearby pristine lakes of the eastern Sierra Nevada and Yosemite. Keep driving!

On our way from Lake Tahoe to June Lake we came across a sign for Mono Lake. I knew very little about Mono Lake (since then it has become a little more popular given a notorious article in Science alluding to an organism capable of incorporating arsenic into its molecular backbone), but for some reason was drawn to it and... We learned about this lake from a food server in Flagstaff, Arizona. Since it was on our way, we decided to stop and check it out. Quiet an interesting site. They have built a boardwalk for foot travelers. The tufa formations are unique. Some of the taller, more impressive ones are too far to observe. The little town is a... More
