Yes, the Kimmel Center is new, big and beautiful but The Academy of Music is Classic Philadelphia. I've been here plenty of times and love, love, love the old draperies, comfy chairs and old Philadelphia feel.

While it was a glorious music hall last century, it has its problems. Many of the seats are barely usable because of bad viewing angles and obstructing pillars. We had to sit through Prokofiev's Cinderella ballet, a very long ballet, sitting in sidewall balcony seats that were perpendicular to the stage. I had neck spasm for weeks afterwards. On another... My sister and I recently went to the Academy of Music to see the Pennsylvania Ballet's wonderful production of Handel's "Messiah." Everything was very orderly, and the audience... More

A breathtakingly beautiful 19th Century building the likes of which I had only seen in movies! If you love architecture this is a must. There are still the original gas lamps illuminating the experior enntrance! We saw Mozart's "Abduction from the Seraglio" and enjoyed it very much.

A couple friends and I visited the Academy of Music to see "Rain - A Tribute to the Beatles". We entered with no problem. No crowds, staff ready to direct you to your seats, friendly and helpful. Although our seats were a little far away from the stage we had a direct view. They also had big screens you could... More
