Our family of 5 just returned from a 5 day stay in Baltimore. We visited 10 Museums during that time and this was our family favorite. As mentioned in other post, the artist have no formal training and some suffer from mental disorders. There are some amazing works here. Each piece has a story of the Artist and the work.... more

Having read the reviews on this site, I was looking forward to checking our this Art Gallery. Currently, the museum is showing its "All Faith's Beautiful" exhibit. It conveys works of art that tie together all religions and show common themes. To tie them all together it contains hundreds of postcards from the PostSecret project. I read every single one... more

I ran into this museum by chance. Not having time to visit the Baltimore Museum of Art, I was walking around the Inner Harbor when I saw these strange beautiful sculptures by a brick building at the base of Federal Hill. I was intrigued! Lucky me, I had enough time to check this unusual museum, nothing like I've ever seen... more

It is not a "traditional" museum. It is unique in style and exhbits artwork that challenges your mind and how one may view art. VERY COLORFUL and DIVERSE!! From well known to local artists, it is a must see and a museum that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, young and old. Everyone who visits Baltimore or lives... more

The Cafeteria is very good, as is the gift shop. I find the art displayed of decidedly inferior quality. In fact, many of the artists are apparently psychotic and produce art that is revolting to anyone except perhaps surgeons or battle hardened soldiers. On the other hand, my wife finds the art quite charming. The exhibits change very frequently. For... more

The location for this museum is great; it's right near the Inner Harbor, so it's looking over the water. We heard about this museum after we took a boat cruise and the narration informed us that there were sculpture made out of toothpicks there....this I just had to see. The museums houses artwork made by artists who are not schooled,... more

My husband and I spent 2nights in Baltimore recently and visited this museum for a few hours based on what I had read about it on Trip Advisor... and it was really worth the trip!!! I loved the unique views and enjoyed the idea that the pieces came from artists w/ no formal schooling... for me it added a whole... more

This is not a "mainstream" museum for it showcases the work of self-taught artists with often unique perspectives. The museum's web site is quite well-done & worth looking at before you go-- e.g., it explains the difference between "visionary art" and "folk art" far better than I can -- but the museum itself packs even more of a wallop. A... more

No one can tell you what artwork is good or bad -- it is subjective -- however, you would be amiss in not visiting AVAM and taking the time to fully explore the wide variety of unique works housed in this truly original museum. more

Unusual and funky little museum of works done by self trained artists. Lots of fun art, some made from found items, some from more traditional materials. Must see, especially the small mechanical works, but all of it was great. more
