Fort Smith National Historic Site is definitely worth a stop if you happen to be passing by. The museum inside has a lot of informative, up-dated displays, including replicas of the prison cells and a portion of the old jail. The gallows are still in tact as well, which is kind of creepy but interesting. A lot of great information... More

Took 3 kids to the ft. smith hostoric site during the Heritage Day festival, so there was no entry fee that day, but the rates were very reasonable and imo, would be worth paying to go in. The Historic site was not only educational, but fun as well. We all enjoyed seeing what Ft. Smith was like in the old... More

I was fascinated to learn about justice system of the "Wild West." They also have a small, but effective display on the Trail of Tears. Well worth the visit.

It is a lovely and well maintained site. I have visited many times and always find something new that I didn't notice before when I visit. Field trips can be arranged, and they are willing to do whatever you ask them to. When my class visited we all were given wooden guns and marched as the soldiers did when the... More

Judge Parker has become known as the hanging judge, and his gallows, court and jail are still there, as well as some of the fort buildings, and foundations. It's a must see if your in Fort Smith.

We visited Fort Smith NHS in the sweltering heat of July. It was over 100 degrees (and very humid), so most of our visit was spent indoors. We watched the brief but informative film about the site (highly recommended--it helps you to understand what you are seeing at the rest of the site), then we saw the basement prison area,... More

This is where "the hanging judge" Isaac Parker became famous. He always said he hated to hang 'em but he had to go by the law. Check out the film at the visitor center and then look around, a lot to see including Judge Parker's courtroom. Outside you can see a replica of the gallows. A lot of interesting history... More
