A wonderful day trip from southern Virginia. This is a beautifully maintained estate and studio on the banks of the Rappahannock River. Lots of gardens to stroll through. A picturesque setting. Bring your camera. No pictures in the house, but OK without flash in the studio.Melchers was one of America's most successful painters who studied and painted in Germany, France... More

This is the little known studio where Gari Melchers resided during his later years. Melchers was a prolific artist of the early 20th century but is relatively unknown in the art world, having been eclipsed by artists such as John Singer Sargent and Mary Cassett. His work, however, is extraordinary and includes portraiture, landscapes, and blblical work with a contemporary... More

I had never hear of Gari Melcher but I am now a fan. The house is great with much of the original items. Even better is his art studio with dozens of his paintings on display.

Mary Washington College deserves a lot of credit for this charming and welcoming museum. The studio with Melchers' paintings, many of them inspired by or completed during his time in the Netherlands, is atmospheric, and the house feels loved and lived-in, filled with the antiques and art the couple bought on their travels. The studio has an addition, which is... More

Gari Melchers is not a well known name in American art, but after visiting his home and studio and seeing his art work, one gets a better appreciation of him and his work. The place is in a beautiful setting in Falmouth, north of Fredericksburg, just off Route 17. The home is from the 1790s and was donated to the... More

Gari Melchers was an American painter who spent much of his life in Europe. He was a top rank portrait painter. During WWI, he moved back to the U.S. and he and his wife settled here. The house is on a hill overlooking the Rappahannock with views of the surrounding hills. The house is homey, a place you could stay... More
