Read reviews, but until you visit you don't get the full effect of the animals roaming freely. Right after arriving in the park on July 20, 2009, we saw some Bison walking through the woods. We also saw burrows along the roadway (probably because people were feeding them even though you are not supposed to) which my kids (17 &... more

I must admit that when I booked my trip to the Blackhills in South Dakota I expected to spend not more than one half day at Custer State Park and thought that Mount Rushmore would be the highlight of the trip. Well ... I ended up spending two and a half days at Custer SP and it was by far... more

I'm not the first one to say this here, but Custer State Park reminded me of a smaller version of Yellowstone, just without the geysers and the crowds. My wife and I visited here during the week after Labor Day and practically had the place to ourselves (no crowds, no waiting, no traffic). The park sits on the edge of... more

Our stay at Custer State Park involved a wedding at Sylvan Lake. I did the photography and with all the beauty in the park the photos turned out stunning. We also toured the park and drove the wildlife loop where we saw an amazing amount of animals in the wild.We were there in early September and the weather was perfect,... more

Custer State Park is a fantastic family adventure. Although not as geologically diverse as Yellowstone, it is a excellent substitute for those looking for wildlife, breathtaking scenery and fewer crowds. My family has camped twice in the camping cabins there. (very clean) We have seen large numbers of pronghorn, buffalo, deer and bighorn sheep. They also have a friendly herd... more

We loved this town that wasn't too touristy and had good access to a lot of local monuments and parks. The restaurants could be great or subpar, but the parks and sites were worth it. Not a lot of chain restaurants, but cute local owned motels and bakeries are there. We loved Custer State Park. Spend at least a few... more

We had never heard of Custer State Park prior to planning our South Dakota vacation. But, what a great place! It was like a smaller and bear-free Yellowstone! (Bears are great, but they make me nervous when hiking, esp grizzlies.) The wildlife rivaled Yellowstone (except the aforementioned bears). We saw tons in all areas of the park, esp at dusk.... more

You can not go wrong staying in this park. My husband and I stayed here in the State Game Lodge and also ate here. The food was good but they do need their servers to be more attentive. Saw wild life from our bedroom window several times. Nice general store and visitor center in walking distance of the lodge. We... more
