My wife and I are members of the National Speleological Society and were on vacation in the Black Hills the Thursday after Labor Day. We had not booked a reservation for a lantern tour because we thought they were over for the season (that's what the website said), only to arrive at the visitor's center and discovery that the last... more

We knew you needed reservations. October's not that busy a time for the area. We called at least two dozen times over the week before our arrival and NOBODY ever answered. Absurd. We showed up and the tour we wanted to go on was sold out. We got tickets for a tour later that day, but it's simply ridiculous to... more

We made our resverations ahead like it said online. We saw many folks get turned away. We made it for the end of the day as we were coming in from Buffalo WY where days before we were in Yellowstone. Anyhow, great take. My 11 yr old and myself felt a little light headed, my husband and 9 yr old... more

We've been in a lot of caves and this wasn't our favorite as it didn't really have anything special to it but it was nice and long and our guide made it worthwhile. He was excellent and definitely lively. we did the scenic tour in the morning (with reservations) at $8/ea. The cave is for the majority of the time... more

We took our 3 kids (10, 10, 11) on the lantern tour at the beginning of August. It was a BLAST!!! I would highly recommend this tour for anyone interesting in spelunking in an old-fashioned way with lanterns! Our guide was entertaining and knowledgable. A few words of warning: 1- Buy your tickets in advance. Call at 8am when they... more

We took the Scenic tour last month and found that it was the best cave tour we have ever been on. Make sure you book your reservation in advance as when we went at 9 am they were already booked for the entire day. This was one of the many highlights of our trip! more

After reading reviews on this site I called ahead for tickets. That was a bit frustrating as you can't stay on hold so you just have to keep calling back. After 10 times, I finally got through in mid afternoon. But very glad I did as when we got there for the first tour in the morning, it was sold... more

The 1.5 hour scenic tour was only $8 per person, which is a bargain in my book. Although a lot of the cave looks very similar, there are plenty of unique items throughout the cave that make the tour worthwhile. Two things to remember: 1) Its only 50 degrees F in the cave all the time, so wear pants and... more

Jewel Cave, named for its multitude of jewel-like nailhead and dogtooth spar formations, is a spectacular introduction to caves. My family and I visited recently and, with the exception of my husband, none of us had been in a cave before. The tour did not disappoint, nor was it too much for those of us who are slightly nervous in... more
