Really long drive but worth it especially during sunset. Your so high in altitude you actually drive through the clouds !

This route has long been touted as difficult to drive. I can see that visibility might be a problem if fog and clouds are an issue, but the road is smooth, well maintained and it was nice seeing the pastures and fields with goats and sheep.

Stayed in Kona but traveled all the way to Hilo...somehow our GPS put us on this road and we loved it! the only bad part was the heavy fog we encountered but once that cleared up, smooth sailing! Great roads!

Nothing bad about this route across the Big Island, but much more interesting to go around the north or south ends of the island and not THAT much shorter.

The road was just about finished when we were on it. I would hope all is done by now. Much faster than the side roads to the north and south.

This rode is 75% new so it is good choice to make your way here... In the night is very dark.. There is no stop so you need to have fuel food and drinks for hr.

Saddle Road is easy to handle for visitors going from one side of the Big Island of Hawaii to the other. The conditions are great and the scenery is terrific! Just watch the stretch with the dips-crazy! The Visitor's Center for Mauna Kea is along the route and the bathrooms are easily accessible (only spot along the way). They are... More

Previous posts and lore made this road something akin to walking a tight rope and if should you fall, you fall into middle earth and are eaten by goblins. Roughly 80% has been recetly re-paved. Yes, there are a few one lane bridges, but nothing to lose any sleep over. This is a fun drive and provides access to Mauna... More
