Harvard Square is a must-see in Cambridge-- it is the bustling heart of this college town. My husband and I visited Harvard Square this past March 2009 with our oldest granddaughter who teaches English and coaches girls' softball and basketball. There is so much to see, and do in this area of Cambridge. We enjoyed watching the skulls on the river, walking through Kennedy Park, lunching and shopping at the Harvard Coop. When I visit a city there's nothing I like better than to find a lively, walkable neighborhood, especially one with an extra feature that sets it apart from average pedestrian-oriented districts. Harvard Square is a very interesting spot. The retail here has gotten a bit less funky and more chain oriented over the years, but there are still many great restaurants and interesting shops here to entertain you.
