I took a friend of mine here who was visiting from Virginia because she thought it sounded interesting. It blew us away. We couldn't believe how nice it was. The museum interior is modern, clean and streamlined with an amazing theater - the best I've ever seen at a museum - that plays three different short films on continuous rotation....

New Bedford has seen better days. Whaling is not exactly a booming industry and the mills closed several decades ago but the city's core remembers its maritime past with a collection of historic buildings, anchored by the Whaling Museum. This is the place to get your sea legs as you learn why New Bedford hosted the most vibrant whaling fleet...

This fantastic museum is in the middle of a National Park in the midst of the city of New Bedford. In the lobby are reassembled skeletons of several whales hanging from the ceiling! The museum is wonderfully done and explains the history of whaling through displays. Also in the museum is a 1/2 size replica of an actual whaling ship...

nice, educational and friendly. we were approached by one of the volunteers who just shared volumns of information with us. made our visit memorable and gave us information that we would never have gotten on our own.
It's been a while since I visited, but it is an attraction that you should visit, explaning the whalers and the need for oil.
We visited this in Feb and there were 4 of us, if you are interested in the history of whaling, a great place for the afternoon
Whaling history, related art & New Bedford history; wonderful blown glass exhibit; interactive areas. Docents are very knowledgable, & museum is well laid out. Location is excellent as well: walk to restaurants, shops, Seamen's Bethel, New Bedford visitor ctr & waterfront/ferries.
We have been here a couple of times. Very educational. Later we took a boat tour of the New Bedford Harbor. That was also very informational. Great fun!
The museum is fascinating. We had a family group, ranging from 8 years old to 64, and every single one of us enjoyed it. When you walk in, you're confronted with the skeleton of a blue whale and immediately realize what these sailors were facing. There's a replica of a whaling ship at 70% full size that everyone can clambor...
