First, practice about 50 times on learning to say the name of this park. We were fortunate to get there a few minutes before a guided tour. The guide, George I think, was great. He is a native and really knows his stuff. This park is great for learning early history of the islands. more

This is a great place to go snorkeling. You'll find tons of fish and even some sea turtles hanging out by the boat ramp. It's a little merkier the closer you are inland so if you are a good swimmer, I recommend venturing out a little farther than where you will see the majority of people snorkeling. It opens up... more

We visited Honaunau as it was recommended for great snorkeling with easy access. SO TRUE! We went to the spot called "two step" which was right beside the boat ramp. Not to be confused with the area where you can rent kayaks----the actual boat ramp. You can walk in and literally in two steps----you are snorkeling. A short swim out... more

The National Historical Park is located almost directly next to a popular snorkeling spot, 'Two-Step'. We walked to the park after snorkeling and took a very scenic, beautiful, self-guided tour. The park has many replicas of ancient Hawaii dwellings, temples and monuments. Make sure to take a brochure and walk to the exhibits in numeric order, the brochure has a... more

Great place to visit for history. It is a self guided tour, and admission is really cheap. It was the place of refuge during ancient times. I had parents with me along with teenagers, and they were all entertained. There is ample parking, and the staff is very helpful. It is worth the visit. You will also see the sea... more

We went in September of 2008, and we thought this was a really interesting stop on our vacation to Hawaii. We loved the cultural references, and I loved the historical aspects and all of the infromation that was provided. The beach was beautiful to look at. Just a really nice spot overall, with some interesting features. We were able to... more

Very beautiful area. We went in close to dusk and watched the sunset, which was amazing. Great place to walk around and explore. We also went scuba diving the next day. It's hugely popular with tours so get there early or real late. The bay was full of snorkelers. I would definitely make time for it. more

We went to this park late one afternoon to walk around and view the sunset. We got in for free (there was a booth where it looked like you had to stop and pay, but when we got close up, there was just a sign that said "Continue Forward"). We had been here before on a previous trip to the... more

This was our very first stop after we landed in Kona and along our drive to volcano. There was a tollbooth at the entrance but no one was there except for a sign that said "continue forward." Not sure if this place is ALWAY free, but it was free for us this saturday afternoon, which was great! We were here... more

Not a high traffic location which is very nice. Very well restored and preserved. Walk out of the lava flow and peek into the tide pools for small fish and soft corals, even saw a couple turtles out there. There was also a small cove we saw several turtles feeding next to the shore. And if you are a good... more
