Pretty ride with lots of photo pops along the way. A less than exciting pay off at the end of the trip.
Driving from the base of the Catalina Mountains in Tucson to the top of Mt. Lemmon is an indescribable thrill. I say it is best experienced as a passenger, because the road is very narrow and winding and the driver had better keep his or her eyes on the road and not marvel at the scenery, lest the driver just... If you are getting too hot in Tucson and want to see something other than the desert, then take this ride up to Mt. Lemmon. As you drive up, the scenery changes drastically. From desert and cactus, to pine trees, and much cooler temperatures. Reminded us of Flagstaff. Amazing, and very close to Tucson. There are many pullouts, and areas... More
wow, I can not say enough about this ride. I mean you actually go from the desert to Canada in 27 miles. we actually checked the air temp when we left Tucson,94 degress up on mt. lemmon, 63 degress. I did observe that saguaro cacti do not grow any higher than approx. 4200 feet. kinda cool if you are into... More
If you are not from the desert nor a mountain resident, this is a must see. 25 miles up to over 8000 feet with many viewing stops along the way. Prepare for at least 20f degree difference between the desert below and the summit.
Just a little way up, the hillside is covered in hundreds of saguaro cactus, its an amazing sight. At windy point is another fantastic view. As we traveled on up it got colder. The mountains and the rock formation are incredible. when we started up it was in the 80's, at the top it was 30 with snow. Views at the... More
This is a wonderful drive. You go thru winding roads and beautiful scenic areas. When you get to the top, there are huge pine trees, a Resturant, and a wonderful pie shop. Be careful though, about once every two years, the mountain will be on fire. This is usually due to campers, but due to the hot weather it sparks quick.
Great views from the Byway. I was planning on getting gas before we when up the byway, but forgot to get any. We very low on gas when we got to the top. There arre no gas satations there, but the people at the fire station sold us 2.5 gallons of gas for $20.
