If we weren't waiting for or seeing a train, it seems that much of our 2 day visit to Flagstaff had something to do with a volcano. We stopped here on our way to the Grand Canyon. Follow Rt. 180 north out of Flagstaff. It is maybe 30 miles out of town, just on the edge of the Coconino National... More

This place is something like you have never seen. It is a very unique, spiritual place. The 1 1/2 mile hike in is a very slight ascent and as good as a sidewalk. As you near the volcano, you notice the huge walls of cinder on each side. Then you reach the ladder and the dam, which was built to... More

Ever stood inside a volcano cone looking out? Red Mountain is on the left side of Hwy. 180 on the way to the Grand Canyon. There's short notice for the turnoff and the road is indistinct, leading to a small parking area. The trail heading in has a steady gentle climb and there's one ladder on the main trail to... More

This is quite an easy hike about 45 km north of the Flagstaff area along Highway 180. The hike is about 2 km oneway through a pinyon and juniper forest to the interior of a volcanic cinder cone. The trail is well marked all the way from the highway. Once you reach the Red Mountain, the cindercone, you will see... More

Short hike of around 3 miles round trip. There is a ladder to get into the collapsed cinder cone. Very interesting rock formations and some great scrambling. We had the place to ourselves which was great.

Easy walk, peaceful, and a very unique rock formation at the end that dates back to Arizona's volcanic past.

I chose this trail as I thought after a night at 7000' ready for some mountain hikes, this would be easy to gauge the terrain and effects. This trail off the 180 is easy to find and a pleasant hour and a bit there and back. Approximately 3 miles there and back with an ascent of 500 feet or so.... More

Don't pass this up if you want an entertaining hike or climb. Average exertion to do this hike. Climb is also average to easy. The features of this spot are unusual in that the volcanic formations seem otherworldly. Holes in orange brown lava flow hills and walls. Unlike other Flagstaff volcanic features. Unlike Hawaii. When you park off route 180... More
