This tour was very interesting. This house is full of history and there are extras that you can learn as side-stories to the main tour and some of the things you learn are amazing. The backyard is huge and you can have lunch at the Carraige House. The sculptures are interesting and quite impressive. They have a behind-the-scenes tour and... more

In addition to the regular tour of The Elms which encompasses the beautifully decorated public portions, we took the Rooftop and Behind the Scenes tour. As members of the Preservation Society, this tour was provided to us as part of our membership. If you visit during the holidays (after Thanksgiving), the three mansions and the behind the scenes, it is... more

This is the most fabulous of the mansions NOT built by the Vanderbilts (Cornelius Vanderbilt’s grandsons built Marble House, Rough Point and The Breakers in Newport). Unfortunately, the home and furnishings were sold in the 1960’s and the home was scheduled for demolition before the Newport Preservation Society saved it. While many of the furnishings were recovered, there are clearly... more

We enjoyed The Elms and were very glad we went. While it is a definite second to The Breakers. if you like interesting details about the people who lived there and the furnishings, you should not miss it because they have a terrific audio tour included in the admission price. It includes taped reminiscences of people who actually attended the... more

I only had a few hours in Newport, and based on recommendations here I decided to go with The Elms tour. I am pleased I did. The unique audio tour is awesome. It totally lets you go at your own pace, and explore to the depth you desire. You can stick to the main narration, which will take you through... more

The Elms was the best of the four mansions we toured in Newport. If I could choose to live in one of the these magnificent summer homes, I would certainly pick the Elms. Although it lacks a view of the ocean, the Elms makes up for it with well manicured gardens and a fabulous conservatory to match. It really feels... more

The Elms ranks with the Breakers and Marble House as one of the most opulent, interesting of the Newport mansions. It is hard to imagine that it was slated for demolition in the early 1960s to make room for a shopping center. Luckily, the Preservation Society saved it and it is well worth a visit. The mansion and grounds are... more
