Chris Riley is a fabulous and knowledgeable guide. Even though the weather was not great Chris made our visit to Mou Waho Island an adventure to remember. Great photographic opportunities and Chris ensured we got to see a range of birdlife. Great fun indeed! Trish and Frances (Burleigh Heads and Gatton, QLD) More

thanks for the review, and it is great to get you Queenslanders out to this amazing island, it always is different, and things happen on a cloudy day that dont occur any other time, with the Buff Wekas going mad getting the worms coming to the surface, and are totally oblivious to the group of people standing 1metre away, when... We were lucky to get Chris to ourselves on our half day boating and hiking adventure. What a trip! The lake was beautiful, the island was beyond cool, and the wildlife was abundant. It was a hot day, but the cold juice Chris provided and the refreshing lake cooled us down before we headed back to the boat. Throughout the... More

Thanks! Its great to slip into the lake on top of the island for a swim when the temperatures reach the 30s plus! after the short walk it is a great reward. A cool drink and a splash in the expansive lake up there, just what the doctor ordered- and the view from the top rounds it off.No houses in... More

The Lake Wanaka Boat Cruise and hike on Mou Waho Island were all we could have wished for and more. Spectacular scenery, many birds and lots of information on the natural history of the area. Chris also asked what our itinerary was and gave us faultless suggestions for places to see and hike after we left Wanaka. More

We did the island 1/2 day trip and had a lovely time. It was well organised and our guide was very knowledgable about the area, the local flora and fauna and adjusted the trip sufficiently to our own interests. We had a very pleasant time and enjoyed taking many photos of the Weka trying to steal our food! More

THANKS! Wally Weka is keen to scam food where ever he can get it, as he has his partner Sally Weka on the nest at the moment, with the summer batch of little black tennis Ball chicks in production. There is plenty of food on the island now for the family with all the trees in berry. And with the giant... More

great to have the "Clan" out to see this fantastic lake, not many fishing spots in the world can boast scenery as good as the fishing! Next time you must visit the Jewel of the lake- the lake on top of an island - unique, and magical, with the Bellbird song echoing around the cliffs, and Wally Weka trying to... More

A trip up lake Wanaka to a protected island, seing endangered species, fantastic views in particular seeing a lake within an island within a lake within an island in an unforgetable country, all done with a with a very knowledgeable guide. Every trip with this company plants a new bush/tree replacing those which have been lost. More

Thanks for your comments, we are doing our best to maintain and restore our little country of contrasts back to its original condition. Islands like Mou Waho are essential in that process as it is able, with constant monitoring by the Department of Conservation, to provide a predator free haven for these rare flightless birds extinct on the mainland South... My best friend and I went on a chartered fishing trip with Chris. First of all he was awesome! I loved how he knew so much about the wildlife and plants of New Zealand. And he backed it all up with loads of books he kept at the front of the boat. It was hard to stay focused on fishing... More

Hey, next time we will show you the real secret of Lake Wanaka- The island with the lake on top! This you won't see in Florida, as it is unique to have it situated 450 feet above the lake below, and the bottom of the lake below is 1200 feet deep, actually below sea level! Giant glaciers carved out the... More

Had a wonderful day trip out at the wanaka lake. We've never fished before & found it pretty easy & fun. Chris is a really nice guy & told us loads about the history of the surrounding areas & we even got to visit a small island where we saw some birds that were once nearly extinct. I would definitely... More

Thanks for the glowing review, with the Salmon, Brown and Rainbow Trout able to be fished year round in 180 sq km Lake Wanaka, it is usually good fishing, and a stop after catching enough to satisfy all, enabled us to have a breif visit to Mou Waho on our return.- Certainly a wilderness experience a long way from London!... If you have only a short time in Wanaka, be sure to include a half day trip with Chris on his boat out to Mou Waho Island, an uninhabited island, rich in natural history, birds and plant life. Chris has an amazing knowledge of the first people who travelled through these parts, the early European settlers and the work that... More
