Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The Val-Dieu Abbey (Valley of God in French) is a former monastery and dates back to 1216.
In 1997, the brewery opened its doors, where a range of abbey beers is brewed, all in the tradition of the former Val-Dieu monks. The last 3 remaining monks left in 2001 to join a larger monastery in the Val-Dieu area. For centuries beer was a trusted alternative to drinking water which frequently caused illnesses such as cholera. The expertise of the monks laid the foundation for today’s Val-Dieu beers. A characteristic of the Val-Dieu beers is the use of soft water which is not sourced from a well or spring but from a lake instead, nearby Lake Gileppe.
Val-Dieu Abbey is home to a brewery (by appointment only), church, court yard, abbey garden (all free of charge, daily from 08:30 until sun set), brasserie (daily, 10:30-18:00) and gift shop (daily: 10:00-18:00) where regional delicatessen can be purchased.
The garden behind the abbey is a pretty 19th century garden including a fine arboretum with some rare varieties of trees. Opposite the Val-Dieu Abbey and next to car park, you will find Le Moulin du Val-Dieu, a restaurant which was opened in 1993 and housed in an old water mill. It was built by monks in the 12th century to grind home-grown wheat into flour to bake bread, their main food staple.

Lovely place to see and enjoy the cheese and beer the abbaye has on offer. They produce it themselves. Go and sit down at the cafeteria and try it before buying at the shop. Do not forget to view the gardens, it s a lovely stroll with great views and water features.

The name Val Dieu is very good. The landscape around is phantastic You can visit the lovely church, lit a candle and enjoy the silence. After doning so, do visit the shop that offers religious objects but also great food like Grand Cru Val Dieu beer and cheese. There are two restaurants on the spot.

We decided to take the guided tour to the abbey and the brewery. The visit to the abbey was very inspiring and educational. We learned many new things about the Scisterzen brotherhood and how the abbey were build. The visit to the brewery was a bit fast but as I'm a guide in an other brewery I appreciated a lot the beer tasting at the end of the tour.

The Brewery of Val-Dieu is the only Belgian abbey beer to be 100% brewed in a living abbey. The water used for the production of the beer comes from the “Barrage de la Gileppe”, famous for its spring of very high quality. The basilica on the spot is very beautiful as well and has a very interesting story about hiding refugees during WW2.
I really recommend the 2 hour visit of the monastery, the basilica and the beery tour with tasting of the 5 different beers.

The Abbey and basilica are beautiful. It was not crowded so we took out time and walked around. Then looked in at the brewery. You cannot buy beer there.

As a group of people, we booked a tour to see the abbey, brewery, a beer tasting followed by a stroll through gardens and quick visit to church before we enjoyed lunch and went to shop to stock up on beer and local delicatessen. Our guide Elizabeth told us all there is to know about the history of the abbey and the process of making beer. We enjoyed our visit but were somewhat disappointed with the restaurant. Although the food was tasty prices were somewhat high for what we got.

We came here on New Year’s Day from Germany for lunch and beers and this place did it disappoint. The meatballs were really delicious and beer was so super awesome as well, that we ended up having 3-4 rounds. The cinnamon Belgian waffle wasn’t too bad either, which was a good snack while waiting for our food to come out. My personal favorite beer was the blond and the tripel. They also had a gift shop that sold beer so ended up buying a few 6 packs of the beer to go too!
