Almost every tour book says see these at high tide. So we spent and extra night in Greymouth to make sure we did. That wasn't necessary. It turns out that the amount of swell in the waves is more important. We saw more action at low tide with 1-2 meter swells than at high tide with 1/2 meter swells. Other... more

On a self-drive a visit to the pancake rocks is a must. Here you will experience the true rugged beauty of the West Coast at its best. Tourists are in small numbers, which means you can enjoy this attraction free of the crowds you would usually expect at such a site.
