About
Lake Viljandi is in a primeval valley, which is 11 m deep, 450 m wide and 4600 metres long. The lake is well-known in Estonia thanks to the song about the boatman of VIljandi, who day-dreams about the beautiful blue eyes of a girl he once saw when he was young. The trail that goes around the lake will take hikers to the observation platform on the other shore where you will see a charming and unique silhouette of the town.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The stairs down from the Town Hall will bring you to the lake in 5 minutes. Ofcourse it will take you a bit longer to get up the hill again :-) I found the lake shore a pleasant place for a hot summer afternoon. You can go for a swim, rent a boat or just relax on the small beach. There are changing cabins, a play area for the kids and a café.

This is a pre-historic valley lake with great connection to Viljandis historic settlement. Look up the history of the lake when you visit to understand how powerful this water source has been. There is a lake beach for water activities but also many private docks that all can use to jump in for a swim. If you go off of a dock then be aware that it gets very deep very fast. Best views of the lake are from castle hills of you're looking to take some stunning photos.

Had the chance to combine a work trip and a running experience around Viljandi lake (only 1/3 of it).
There is a walking path around the lake (~15km) with gravel surface boarding the lake.
View is fantastic, old trees and clean water.

I also noticed a brand new playing area for kids (subsidies by EU money), football field(s), waterfront peers and open water swimming area.

The way and stairs down the lake shore are quite steep but definitely worth the walk. Along the way you will also see sculpture "Runner" and another sort of artwork, names engraved to concrete stones. There is at least one cafe by the lake.
