The site is located on the riverbank of the Usumacinta river in Chiaps. The only way to reach is by boat along the river which forms the natural border between Mexico and Guatemala. The site contains imressive ruins, with palace and temples and well-preserved stones. The major architectures are lintels (set above the doorways of the main structures) and stelae.... More

After reading: http://lacanja.com/campamento-en-lacanja.html I traveled to the Lancondian community, in the south of Chiapas with "Kukulcan Travel" (I'll discuss them shortly). I was very disappointed on several counts, although the Bonampak and Yaxchilan tours were both adequate (relatively speaking). The Lancondian guide, a 15 year old just out of high school, was very friendly and kind, yet totally clueless about... More

We had a rental car so we decided to drive ourselves. Bad idea! After driving down from Palenque using our own gasoline, paying 52 pesos to enter the road, 110 pesos for the ruins admission, meals, and then fare for the launch, we spent almost as much as if we had taken the tour, which would have included a guide... Yaxchilan isn't as famous as some of the other Mayan ruins, but I throughly enjoyed our visit here. We visited as part of a guided tour, led by a practicing archaeologist. Having some one on hand to explain what we were looking at greatly enhanced the experienced. If you don't have a guide, read some books. We got a map... More

The typical day trip to Yaxchilan includes a stop by Bonampak. Combined, the two sites give you a real glimpse into the small scale artistry of the Classical Mayans. The carvings at Yaxchilan are extraordinary--especially those on the lintels at the high temple. And, of course, the murals at Bonampak are a unique treasure and a miracle by right of... More

This Mayan site is extraordinary, hidden away in the jungle, you get there by a 30-minute boat ride down the Usumacinto River, alligators sunning on the banks. Not much restoration here. You feel as if you were the one to have discovered it. Loved this site. Wish there had been more time to explore the higher structures. Go on your... More

Facinating boat ride to the shore in front of Yaxchilan and a short walk up to the tour gathering place. This is much more expansive then the guide wanted to show us so we took it upon ourselves to do a little extra looking up a path that took us to additional ruins with a fantisic view looking out over... We did this full day tour with Kim's Tours in Palenque Office nr Best Western Hotel. Definitely best tour operator, owner runs the trips and is well respected by all contacts. The trip is inclusive of breakfast, lunch and 45 min each way riverboat trip to Yaxchilan (only way to get there) and all entrance fees. Ruins are very impressive... More

Yaxchilan was a powerful late classic Mayan city located by the Rio Usumacinta, which provides a natural boarder between Mexico and Guatemala. At present, the only way to reach the site is from Frontera Corozal by lancha, which takes about 45 minutes along the Usumacinta. The trip by lancha was great fun and with any luck, one can spot crocodiles... More
