It was well worth the stop to see the splendid ceilings and walls. We went on a Saturday and were wanting to tour the brewery but were not able to. Many shops along the street too for souvenirs.

It is on the road to Oberammagau (from GAP) and you can not miss the huge dome. Worth a stop but you don't need more than 20 minutes.
There´s 80 monks working here in different jobs from teacher´s to brewers and distillers, the Church itself is very ornate and dates back to the 1330´s.After entering the ouside doors the inner door is the original Medieval frame showing King Ludwig the Bayer kneeling before the Cross.

Quite a huge landmark, impressive cupola, the place is huge!
Their is a very nice gift shop with many religious articles. The beer is made at the abbey and available at the restaurant across the street.
We stopped in Ettal on our way back to GaPa after visiting Schloss Linderhof.
As far as we could tell, the only thing to do at the Abbey was to admire it from the outside (quite palatial, and set in front of a commanding mountain peak!) and to visit the inside of the church, which was indeed impressive.

In 2010 the abbey came under fire when several priests were accused of beating and molesting boys. http://articles.cnn.com/2010-03-03/world/germany.abuse_1_sexual-abuse-abuse-by-catholic-priests-child-sex-abuse-claims?_s=PM:WORLD. Despite the scandal, which I found out about after...

If you are in Ettal you must visit the Benediktinerabtei. The church is wonderful decorated and the garden outside is full of flowers. There are also a little shop where you can buy local produced beers and liquores.
We were staying across the street at the Hotel Ludwig de Bayer and took in this site. A very large monastery and boarding school. The history of this Catholic religious institution goes back hundreds of years. Very beautiful and historic church. Very peaceful grounds. Small gift shop which sells sovenirs and the famous Kloster Ettal liqueur.
