About
T&R Theakston Ltd is one of the oldest family breweries in Yorkshire and home of the legendary Old Peculier Ale. Visit this historical brewery in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales town of Masham. Experience first hand the craft and skill that goes into brewing our beers, the brewing process is built on almost two centuries of tradition, passed down through five generations of the Theakston family. Have a pint of our legendary beer in the Brewery Tap - The Black Bull in Paradise, names after the original inn, the Black Bull, where Robert Theakston first brewed our legendary ale and also the site where our brewery stands, once known as Paradise Fields. There is plenty to do and see including the Cooper’s shop where the Cooper crafts the wooden casks – one of the last remaining working cooperages in the country. Leave plenty of time to browse the gift shop full of ‘Peculier’ souvenirs and other Yorkshire delights.

- FannyFanackerpants68 contributionsAbove and beyondTheakston’s Old Peculier is my husband’s favourite drink ( with their other ranges all vying for second place). We’d booked a trip to Masham for his 60th birthday. I mentioned this when booking for the brewery tour and asked them if I surreptitiously bought him a gift from the shop, would they be able to present it at the end of the brewery tour. Not only did they trim an area in their brewery bar The Black Bull in Paradise up with “Happy Birthday “ balloons, badges for him and the table and “Birthday Boy “ banners which was completely unexpected but to cap it all they got Mr Simon Theakston to come down and present the gift to hubby in person and he was happy to stay a while chatting and answering our questions. Absolutely blown away by the level of service. Fantastic staff Really knowledgeable about their craft. Interesting place. Brilliant day. Couldn’t praise them highly enough. Thank you for making his 60th memorable. We’ll be backVisited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 March 2023
- TravelmanLancashire, United Kingdom114 contributionsBrilliant. This brewery tour was absolutely fantastic, informative and friendly can't recommend highly enough. We managed to get on a 2pm midweek tour and to our surprise we were the only people attending which made it all the more personal. After spending too long in the paradise bar I forget our hosts name now but he was fantastic. The history of this working brewery is fascinating. As we walked the different floors we learned the process of the master brewers and all our questions regardless of how stupid we're answered. Back at the paradise bar I sampled 6 of the cask ales in 1/3 glasses. Absolute perfection. Bravo guys. 👏🏾Visited March 2023Travelled with familyWritten 31 March 2023
- Mark BGuernsey, United Kingdom22 contributionsWe loved itI was given this as birthday gift. It was a wet Sunday but the tour was amazing - my wife, son and I thoroughly enjoyed the tour and the homely nature of the business. A real credit to the family and all of their dedicated staff. Joan (If we have remembered her name correctly) was the font of all knowledge on Theakston’s and made our afternoon. We loved it and will definitely come back again. Thank you so much.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 April 2023
- Review kitty26 contributionsOne of the best pints in the countryNice range of ales on tap that are chilled perfectly, you can’t get much better than a pint of Theakstons Mild in warm weather. The little shop is limited although reasonably priced and we brought a couple of tins to take home. The only downside is dogs are not allowed indoors at all and there is limited shade in the outside seating area. We would not have had more than one drink here even without the dog as the seating is in a bit of a heat trap and was a bit much on a hot day.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 June 2023
- AlbertSalichsManresa, Spain11,524 contributionsVery nice local breweryTheakston Brewery is located in Masham, a little town in the middle of England. It is a traditional brewery with a bar, where you can taste some of their beers. A very comfortable place with a local atmosphere. Pitifully, I arrived there too late and I could not do a guided visit in the brewery, only tasted beers in the bar/pub. I hope next time to arrive earlier and visit the place.Visited December 2022Travelled soloWritten 12 July 2023

It was interesting and the drink at the end felt very welcome. All staff friendly and the bar itself is lovely and worth a visit.Visited July 2023Travelled soloWritten 14 July 2023

- Roger E4 contributionsA very good Brewery tour.Went on Theakstons Brewery tour this afternoon . Very good experience. The guide we had was very knowledgeable and interesting. She invited wuestio s and answered everything we wanted to know, including a couple of insights into the difference between brewing beer for cask consumption and brewing for bottles or cans -very helpful. And the pub afterwards was good too. Very nice beer indeed!! Thoroughly recommended.Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten 22 August 2023

We were welcomed by Rebecca and staff, excellent service from staff who obviously enjoyed working there, they offered to take photos of us behind the bar and also offered samples of the drinks. Great ambiance and an excellent shop attached, well worth a visit.

Great tour with Joan - so knowledgeable, enthusiast and obviously has a great love for the brewery. We learnt a huge amount and she answered our endless questions. A wonderful place which celebrates the history and current methods of beer making.

Not very welcoming, Not dog friendly (unless you want to sit outside on a cold winters day) In the Yorkshire Dales, where most places ARE dog friendly, find those pubs/shops etc. like the BLACK SHEEP BREWERY a stones throw away…Dogs allowed throughout & treats given, and a lovely atmosphere inside…opposite to what we experienced here, when I looked inside before we left…the bar area small, crowded & unwelcoming. Do yourself a favour go to the Black Sheep Brewery, beer is also much nicer in my opinion. And where dog owners money is welcomed with a friendly smile.

A lovely tour around a Victorian survivor! The brewery has changed little in its 150 years, mechanisation and electrification has fitted around the original structure which offers a unique glimpse back in time. The product is king at Theakston’s and the guide spoke with enthusiasm and authority about what it means to brew real ale, cask conditioned and high quality. The best part was, of course, the samples at the end: each visitor receives a voucher for a pint, or two halves or three thirds which allowed us as a couple to sample most of the ale on the bar. The star of the show is, of course, Old Peculier, Theakston’s legendary ale still served from wood barrels made on site by their own cooper.

Spent 3 days in Masham, in which time we had multiple trips to the Black Bull in Paradise. We also did the tour with Rebecca which was very informative and good fun.
A pint of Old Peculiar and a game of dominoes in front of a roaring fire will be fondly remembered.
Would highly recommend a visit.

Very aggressive barman shouted at me for bringing a dog into the bar. It's a very odd policy for North Yorkshire but no need to be so rude. I can see there is a sign now. But it's on the floor and way out of my eye line. Felt bit humiliated.

Arrived there at about 12.30 to be told by a woman that there wasn’t a tour till 1 pm but come back about 12.45 for a safety check, we hung around for a hour and went back to be told by the same miserable woman that the 1pm tour was fully booked, definately won’t be going back and I would advise them to give some customer facing lessons to certain staff

How long is the tour?

It took us about an hour but it depends on how many peoples questions on the way round and at the end. We were in a small group of 6 so there weren't many questions asked. Well worth doing the tour , we really enjoyed it.
Hi. Do you allow dogs on the brewery tour? Thanks.

A brewery is essentially a food preparation area so I think you already suspect the answer will be no and won't be surprised by that.
However, they are a friendly bunch at Theakston so why don't you email or phone them?
If your dog is a guide dog or assistance dog I feel sure that they will do everything they can do to help you.

Apologies for the late reply. There’s lots of nearby parking as it’s a short walk from the market place. I don’t think children are allowed on the brewery tours but you would need to ring and ask the question. Staff are very friendly.
