In 1949 its owner, Claude Lane, indulged his hobby by building a miniature 15” gauge tram, which he ran at garden fetes. This portable system enjoyed temporary homes at St Leonard’s and Rhyl before evolving onto the 2’ gauge Eastbourne Tramway. Many of the present trams were built at Eastbourne, but by the mid 1960’s the tramway’s success was outgrowing the mile line. Claude therefore began to look for alternative locations. In late 1969, Claude purchased the Seaton to Colyton section after the branchline had been closed by Dr Beeching in 1966 and, after a mammoth relocation from Eastbourne, the first section was opened in 1980. Since then the tramway has developed into one of Devon’s best loved attractions.New trams have been added to the fleet and the buildings have been much improved in order to meet the needs of the thousands of enthusiastic people who visit each year. « less

It is wonderful to see the old trams being put to great use as a tourist attraction. Great to enjoy the views of the wetland reserve and river as you travel in an old tram in our case one built in 1906 a great way to take in the view. You could easily combine a good walk with a one... More

Amazing 3/4 sized trams running from the slightly sparse seaside spread of Seaton, along the Axe valley to quaint Colyton station. Great fun for all ages, lovely views and wildlife. Can recommend cod and chips from "Frydays" in Seaton. Watch out for the new houses going up on the dredged Isle of Wight shingle platform next to the huge Tesco.

I expected a ride on a tram.... We got one, but this place does it so well. The counter staff and drivers we really friendly, joking with us and each other throughout the day. The mood was always lighthearted. The trams are lovely. They were all beautifully restored and maintained. The ride from Seaton was along the edge of River... More

Staff were very helpful and took their time to help our disabled friends get aboard the tram. Driver was very knowledgeable of the surrounding area and told us about all the wildlife to be seen.
