During the planning of our swing through Malta, Sicily and Puglia, climbing this staircase was one of the must do's. This was day 13 of our trip and we had already climbed hundreds of steps so what was another 142 for two seniors? Drove to Caltagirone from Ragusa Ibla where we had spent the night. Found parking in the pay... More

While the staircase is pretty, I have to say that I was a bit disappointed. As with many places in Sicily it could do with a bit of low maintenance, ie taking out the weeds etc. We just arrived at the end of the flower display on the stairs and can imagine that it looked pretty impressive when it was... All I can say is that I heard two tourists say to one another: "what is the gardener doing? The friend exclaimed " He is filling up the gaps with other flowers"! That's funny, because from this picture on your left, it was possibile to focalize on a real floweral boquet set in a vase......there were no gaps letft inadvertently!... More

Loved the quaintness of this Sicilian town. Great sites from the top of the "Scala". We also enjoyed the park in Caltagirone along with the Ceramics museum. Good place to lay back and relax enjoying the scenery in a Mountain town.

I had heard these steps were lovely, so we made a detour from our route to come here. I am so glad we did! It was definitely a highlight. We wandered around for a while looking at the buildings and then without looking, stumbled onto the steps. I had no idea there was going to be 142 of them!! Nearly... More

I have visited Santo Stefano di Camastra (famous for its ceramics) several times and couldn't wait to visit Caltagirone just to climb this staircase! 142 DEEP steps worth taking slowly to appreciate the intricate art work on each step. The staircase is lined with ceramic studios and a ceramic museum (free entry) which is well worth a visit. At the... More

No visit to Caltagirone would be complete with climbing the magnificent seventeenth century Scala di S. Maria del Monte. Recently listed as a World Heritage Site, the stairway consists of 142 steps that connect the lower city and seat of temporal power at the Palazzo Sanatorio to the upper district and seat of religious power at the ancient church of...
