Owner description:
Bodelwyddan Castle dates from the 15th century, although the building was remodelled extensively in the 19th century in the Gothic Revival style. Bodelwyddan Castle is a long term partner of the National Portrait Gallery, with artworks also from the V&A and Royal Academy. It has been lavishly restored to create a fine, 19th Century, country house setting for displaying portraits, sculpture, decorative arts and furniture from the period.Recent improvements include dedicated special exhibitions galleries and several family-friendly, hands-on rooms to explore portraiture, Victorian inventions and amusements and the story of Lowther College, the school in the castle.Set in 260 acres of grounds, the deer park is a safe, open space ideal for walking or playing games; the old walled garden is a tranquil sun-trap; and the historic woodland and orchard are a great place to walk and enjoy the wild flowers. Also in the grounds are the unique remains of World War 1 practice trenches, dating from when Bodelwyddan Castle was used as a training camp to prepare new recruits for trench warfare.New for this year is the superb Rabbit Wood Play Area (with activities for older as well as pre-school children) and an extended cafe with a new menu.
