The Krämerbrücke is the oldest secular building in Erfurt and is one of the city's best-known landmarks with a closed bridge development on both sides with half-timbered houses. It is the longest bridge in Europe that is continuously covered with houses. The pedestrian bridge spans the Gera, known here as "Breitstrom", and connects Benediktsplatz in the old town center with the Wenigemarkt in the eastern extension of the old town. But attention, when walking from the “Benediktsplatz” in the direction og the bridge, you have to look for an “alley” on your left hand side, this one is leading to the bridge, otherwise you will pass it without seing the bridge, like it has happened to us!

Erfurt was a stop on our bus trip from Frankfurt to Berlin. So happy that we stopped there. A beautiful historic center. The Cathedral and Saint Severus were excellent. Lunch was great. Would highly recommend even with all the tourists like us!

Standing in the Historic Domplatz looking up at the Erfurt Cathedral - taking a panoramic view from the Domplatz - is a memorable experience visiting this beautiful City of Erfurt.

Interesting place to explore with great views of the city. There is also a restaurant with even better views. The sun sets behind the citadel. It looks like they have a major plan for restoration/development by 2021.

Although I have visited Germany many times since I studied in West Germany 60 years ago, it never occurred to me to visit Erfurt. Ditto for my wife. Of course, it was inaccessible until after 1989, but even then, it seemed too much off the beaten track. I changed my mind because of a wish to visit Weimar and the discovery that Erfurt, 20-odd km to the east, has much better rail connections. Erfurt has proved to be a real eye opener: a lovely town with many things to see and do. I hope I'll be back.

Amazing, well-told story of Jewish life, and death, in Erfurt. The recent find of the Jewish treasures, now in the synagogue's basement, is spectacular.

Great city centre in Erfurt - thanks to only few war damages a well-kept ensemble. Worth to look at from the marketplace below, from the space between the two churches and from the opposite citadel. Incredible masterpieces of medieval architecture and spatial planning.

This museum is away from the major attractions in Erfurt but is so worth visiting. Located on the outskirts of the city, Topf & Söhne was a diversified manufacturing company that had an enormous physical footprint. A tiny division within the company engineered and made ovens for the crematoria in about half of the Nazi death/concentration camps, including Auschwitz. The museum details how an "ordinary" company with "ordinary" owners and "ordinary" employees came to participate in atrocity. The permanent exhibition offers much on which to reflect. Descriptions in the exhibit are in both German and English; the documents featured in the exhibit, of course, are almost exclusively in German. I spent about 3.5 hours here, reading every English description, using my basic German language skills to try to decipher some of the original documents, and visiting a temporary exhibit. I think most people would spend less time here -- maybe two hours?

Would visit if you have chance, is good for a Sunday stroll around the park, good parking options and public transport links on the Tram to get you there and back.

Certainly has the wow factor for how an old square presents itself. Many different buildings and vibrant. Don't get squashed by a tram when you're looking up at the facades!

You can easily spend all day in this beautiful park. It is lovely to walk around, sit and relax, enjoy all the different trees and plants, sit and eat at the café, relax on the chairs next to the water...in short: a quiet peaceful way to spend the day. I would go again any time - obviously only in nice weather...

This modern museum is located in the former Stasi (secret police) headquarters in Erfurt. It’s just north of the Domplatz and easily accessible.

The top floor is the original Stasi jail. The cells have been preserved, and informational displays describe life under detention. Particularly disturbing was the “isolation” cell, where prisoners could be held alone in near-complete silence. The cells also had tiny windows that afforded little ventilation and so must have been terribly stifling in the summer. (Make sure to visit the restrooms in the basement!)

The floors below describe life in the DDR via engaging and colorful displays of artifacts, documents, and other memorabilia. Topics include politics, art and culture, industry and commerce, and daily life. We learn about how the population adapted to scarcity and repression. The final rooms describe the end of the DDR in Erfurt and the amazing story of how local people took over the building.

Displays were mostly in German, but we were provided audio guides that contained extensive listening material. One could easily spend upwards of two hours listening to every entry. We arrived in the afternoon and the museum was not busy at all during our stay. Highly recommended for those interested in local history and the nature of the Stasi.
