Let's start with the warning. If you cannot walk up a 300 foot, steep incline or 3 flights of stairs, don't bother coming. That is the path you have to take just to buy your tickets. Also pay for parking or you could get ticketed. Make sure you get the audio tour which greatly enhances the visit. I thought the castle was a fascinating history from Roman watch tower to the residence of Count Vianden to the destruction of the castle in the 1850s and later the archeological rebuilding to its present state. The tour moves from cannonballs and knights to regal splendor and well worth supporting.

Vianden is a picturesque town located on the Our River, it is a short distance from the border with Germany. The town is famous for its castle which is perched on the hillside overlooking Vianden and for its connections with Victor Hugo who spent a long period of time in the town. Altstadt Vianden is incredibly atmospheric with its cobbled streets and colourful buildings, it is very touristy but also charming. As we were staying in Vianden we were able to explore the area at off peak times without the crowds around. It is well worth a visit.

The author Les Misérables stayed in Vianden several times escaping his stressful French life. It is good the the mementos of his presence got preserved in Vianden. Here you can learn everything you ever wanted to know about the great writer.
After visiting the museum one can sip coffee or tea or perhaps a beer sitting in Victor Hugo restaurant across the street.

Called "one of the finest expressions of Gothic art in Luxembourg" this church will appear during the on foot exploration of Grand-Rue. The church itself is amazingly so built in 1248! The interior details were added gradually later - like the impressive and ornate mid-18th century rococo altar or a large choir from 1600s . There is also Trinitarian cloister connected with the church.
Trinitarian church is an interesting historical landmark in Vianden and as such should be visited.

We went to the Museum of Caricature on Grand Rue in Vianden and it was closed. Our persistence in exploration of Vianden allowed us to see the caricature exhibit in the Vianden castle which temporarily (end-tail pandemic times?) seems to be hosting what one normally expects in the Musee de la caricature. Clever, witty and entertaining exhibit

Vianden Dam is a hydroelectric dam located to the north of Vianden, it was built for the Stolzembourg pumped storage power plant. Along the Our River is the lower reservoir, the upper reservoir is located at Mont St. Nicolas. Construction of the dam started in 1959 and was completed in 1962.  The dam wall was recently transformed in a work of art by German artist Klaus Dauven. The reverse graffiti artwork portrays the faces of five workers who were involved in the construction of the structure. It is a worthwhile visit whilst in the Vianden area.

I did not fully realize the full extension of the Victor Hugo's Vianden connection. The location of the Bust is excellent by the OUR river at the entrance to the bridge and across the street from Victor Hugo's museum and former residence. If still alive he would have seen his statue from his window.
The statue was created by Auguste Rodin and well executed in bronze.
Victor Hugo reportedly created Le Miserables in his safe-haven of Vianden

Only used on way up and had good views over the town of Vianden. No queue and got straight on. There is either a 600m or 1800m route to the castle from the top. We did the 600m route and you definitely need to be steady on your feet and ideally have some good footwear to do this. Noticed 2 x bike rack Lifts which could hold 3 bikes were also available which might come in handy for some. Car parking in town likely to be difficult in peak season.

Surprisingly modern statue complex surrounding the fountain on the city square. There is an explanatory description available for the curious.

When traveling to Vianden to visit the castle, it's easy to spot the ancient-looking old stone church at the base of the mountain near the bridge. It's well worth having a quick look inside. The church was constructed by the Order of the Knights Templar in the 13th century. The church was burned in 1723, but rebuilt immediately following. The current church has an interesting Baroque altar dating back to 1768.
