- Holly KAuckland, New Zealand18 contributionsExperiencing Aotearoa NZ's history and culture is a must-do for Kiwis and tourists alike, its a beautiful walk, and make sure to wear your sunglasses and sunscreen!Written 13 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Michael CDerby, UK2,011 contributionsThis is a lovely place with traditional buildings still dominating the area.. We stayed in the town for two days and enjoyed walking around the harbour every day. The harbour itself is charming and the views across the bay are great.Written 13 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - BuzzieFamilyKitchener, Canada100 contributionsHiking the trails around islands is a great thing to do in New Zealand -- try also Waiheke Island near Auckland (although that one can be very busy) and Quail Island near Christchurch. All three are reachable by nice ferry rides at reasonable prices; in the cae of Urupukapuka, it's about a 40-minute ride. There are many trials on Urupukapuka, but doing the circle island one is terrific. You can do it in 3 hours or so, depending on how long you stop at one of the beaches for a refreshing swim virtually alone even at the height of summer. On the hike, there is something beautiful to see at basically every turn in the trail. And when you get back to the ferry dock, there is a nice bistro with lots of brews on tap after the hike. A great day trip!Written 6 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- JoR12 contributionsThey were always very helpful when I'd pop on in to look at tour options, but one particular gentleman went above and beyond to help me board the Russell ferry in time for my tour from Russell in the morning as a cruise liner had arrived that day and the queue for the ferry was incredibly long. Normally the line isn't that long but in this particular instance everyone has arrived to explore so I was very grateful for his assistance.Written 18 May 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Shelley MAlbany, New Zealand792 contributionsYou have the option of a long or short walk. The view was worth the walk. It is mainly uphill on the way up, which can be challenging for older people, but easily 30 mins each way on the short track to lookout point.Written 12 March 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - MissTinkerbelleChristchurch, New Zealand171 contributionsWent there for Xmas day service- great vicar who kept the service short and relevant. The church itself is beautiful- stone with stunning stained glass windows. The graveyard is worth a look tooWritten 8 January 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- nzp0ppyNelson-Tasman Region, New Zealand24,885 contributionsIt was a 21km walking loop with 750 metres of uphill. We did the lookout extension between orongo bay and russell - but i dont recommend it as a must do.
the section from paihia to opua goes along rocks and boardwalks. it needs to be low or a few hours either side of low tide. it winds in and out of bays. its not well marked after the bridge and then follow the trail and turn right about ten metres after the white fence.
the boardwalks along the trail are great and its very diverse from coastal, to lovely forest, raupo, mangroves. the last 8km was a disappointing as it seemed to lose the trail and we were walking beside a road, or a scramble up a fenceline.
Enjoyed lunch in Russell and then ferry back to Paihia. i recommend the walk for any moderate fitness and its a great way to see the areaWritten 5 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. I have been a golf travel writer for many years playing around the globe and found the Waitanga course very interesting, in someplaces rather tricky (narrow fairways and small greens) but all in all, this is a place I would recommend to any golf traveller. The backnine provide great views to the Bay of Islands and the holes offer the chance to open your shoulders. The putting surface at the 11th and 14th reminded me of some cape greens at Pebble Beach and Teeth of the Dog - simply breathtaking.
A word to the post of Joanne W: Yes, I experienced the same at the reception. The man didn't offer a cordial welcome, no information for a first time visitor and behaved borderline rude. As a former golf director I would well advise him to go shopping for another job where he does not have to deal with 'intruding' guests from abroad. Fortunately this did not affect the fun we had on this early spring day!Written 26 December 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - PBPGYorkshire, UK6,010 contributionsThe Propeller from HMNZS Canterbury that was decommissioned in 1971 and sunk as a dive wreck in 2007. - mdc12963Wellington, New Zealand48 contributionsIt is an interesting time walk learning the history of Waitangi and Pihia
However t wad told that the time walk started at the treaty house and you have to pay to go into it.
